Devotion: Always Be Thankful

We know that this world will eventually fade away and everything in it, everything on it, and everything around it will fade away as well.  The things that people have placed so much importance on, those things that so many crave, all those evil forbidden things that people seem to be drawn to, each and every one of them will also fade away as the world fades.  But those who are pleasing God and doing the will of God will live forever.  Therefore, for this reason, we should be thankful.  God is working things out for us, even when we don’t see it or feel it.  We just need to keep our faith in God and be thankful for all that he has given us.  There is always something to be thankful for, if we would just look.

It has been said that the more thankful we are, the more we attract things to be thankful for.  Those who take life day by day, complain very little, and are thankful for the things in life, for they are happy.  Scripture tells us to “always give thanks for everything to our God and Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ” (Ephesians 5:20 TLB).  Maybe this is why those who are thankful for the things in life are happy.

“And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful.  Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.  And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.  And be thankful.  Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.  And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him” (Colossians 3:15-17).

There is a peace that comes from God that we are to allow to rule in our heart.  As members of the one body, we are called to live in this peace and to always be thankful.  This is not only our responsibility, but also our privilege.  When we allow this peace to be present in our heart and in our lives, it will settle all questionings.  The teachings of Christ and his words are there to fill and enrich our lives and to make us wise, provided we allow them to do that.  The message of Christ, in all its richness, should be a rich treasure in our heart and its wisdom used to teach and admonish one another in psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, as we sing to God with grace and thanksgiving in our heart.  But here is the thing, whatever we do or say, we are to do as a representative of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through him to God the Father.

“In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you” (I Thessalonians 5:18).  “And in that day shall ye say, Praise the Lord, call upon his name, declare his doings among the people, make mention that his name is exalted.  Sing unto the Lord; for he hath done excellent things: this is known in all the earth” (Isaiah 12:4-5).  “Thanks be unto God for his unspeakable gift” (II Corinthians 9:15).

No matter what happens, we are to always be thankful, for this is God’s will for us who belong to Christ Jesus.  And in that wonderful day, we will give praise to the Lord; we will call upon him as we lift up and honor his holy name.  We will tell the world just how mighty he is and of his wondrous love.  We will sing praises to the Lord for the excellent and noble things that he has done as we make known these things throughout the entire earth.  While we are truly thankful for the good things that occur in our life, let us be equally thankful for the bad things that happen, because they can open our eyes to the good things we weren’t paying attention to before.  Every struggle that we have gone through in life has brought us to where we are today.  They have made each of us into the person that we currently are.  Today, we can truly say that we are thankful for each of those hard times because believe it or not, each one has made us stronger and made us wiser.  Remember, in all things, be thankful, for we all truly have a lot to be thankful for. Thanks be unto God for his unspeakable gift. Amen.
