Devotion: Enjoy The Lord

With all that mankind has accused God of, which includes plenty mischaracterizations, many believe that it is not possible for anyone to “enjoy the Lord.”  Most of us are aware that God has never given us the punishment that our sins deserve nor rewarded us according to our wrongdoings, but instead has forgiven us.  Scripture tells us that God is merciful and gracious towards us.  The truth is, God’s mercy towards us, those who reverence, honor, and worship him, is as great as the heavens are above the earth.  He is full of kindness, love, and pity.  He is tender and sympathetic to us who respect, obey, and praise him.  He is slow to anger and does not hold a grudge because his anger does not last forever.  God is like a father who has pity on his children.  For the most part, we enjoy our earthy fathers or those we know to be and call father, but we do not share that same enjoyment with God.

“Submit yourselves therefore to God.  …Draw nigh (near) to God, and he will draw nigh (near) to you” (James 4:7-8).  “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding” (Proverbs 3:5).  “Trust in the Lord, and do good...  Delight thyself also in the Lord; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.  Commit thy way unto the Lord; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass.  ...Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for him…” (Psalm 37:3-7).

Drawing near to God and getting closer to him is a result of “surrendering or submitting more,” not a result of “trying harder.”  Part of us drawing near to God, requires us to submit ourselves accordingly to God.  It requires us to trust in, to lean on, and to rely on God with all of our heart.  It requires us to be confident in God, to commit our way to him, to rest in him and to wait patiently for him.  And with all of that, we are to delight ourselves in the Lord, or in other words “take delight or enjoyment in the Lord.”  Taking delight in the Lord means that we should enjoy being in fellowship with God and not look at it as something we are obligated to do.

“Rejoice in the Lord always: and again I say, Rejoice.  Let your moderation be known unto all men.  The Lord is at hand.  Be careful (anxious) for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.  And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep (guard) your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:4-7).  “I will praise thee, O Lord, with my whole heart; I will show forth all thy marvelous works.  I will be glad and rejoice in thee: I will sing praise to thy name, O thou most High” (Psalm 9:1-2).

We should rejoice in the Lord always, which is to celebrate, to express joy, to be pleased about, and to be glad, in the Lord.  We should always make a joyful noise unto the Lord.  It is always a good thing to give thanks to God and to sing praises to him.  In other words, we should be happy and delight ourselves in the Lord.

“It is good to say thank you to the Lord, to sing praises to the God who is above all gods.  Every morning tell him, ‘Thank you for your kindness,’ and every evening rejoice in all his faithfulness.  Sing his praises, accompanied by music from the harp and lute and lyre.  You have done so much for me, O Lord.  No wonder I am glad!  I sing for joy” (Psalm 92 1-15 TLB)!

Yes, we should be glad in the Lord, rejoicing in him always.  We should be cheerful in the Lord, singing praises to him always.  Every morning we should be ever grateful, thanking him for his kindness and every evening, we should be eternally humble, acknowledging all of his faithfulness.  Every day we should delight ourselves in the Lord for his grace, mercy, and all of his many blessings towards us.  Every day we should “enjoy the Lord.”

As always, we give thanks and glory to God for his wisdom and understanding.  We are so blessed to be able to share with you, those things that God has placed in our hearts.  We continue to pray that our inspirational messages will be a blessing to each of you and that you will be the better for having read them.  If you are blessed by what has been provided, please feel free to share so that others may be blessed as well; for as freely as our Father has given this to us, we freely give so that others may share in the love and be blessed.  Amen.

Enjoy your blessings - KW
