Devotion: Jesus Never Fails

Most people, both believers and non-believers know the story of how Adam’s disobedience allowed sin to enter into the world and come upon the human race.  When sinned entered, death caught a ride and spread throughout the world causing everything to grow old and to die.

“For this one man, Adam, brought death to many through his sin.  But this one man, Jesus Christ, brought forgiveness to many through God’s mercy.  Adam’s one sin brought the penalty of death to many, while Christ freely takes away many sins and gives glorious life instead.  The sin of this one man, Adam, caused death to be king over all, but all who will take God’s gift of forgiveness and acquittal are kings of life (reign in life ) because of this one man, Jesus Christ.  Yes, Adam’s sin brought punishment to all, but Christ’s righteousness makes men right with God, so that they can live.  Adam caused many to be sinners because he disobeyed God, and Christ caused many to be made acceptable to God because he obeyed” (Romans 5:15-19 TLB).

Most believers know that through God’s mercy, Jesus was able to bring forgiveness to everyone who would accept God’s gift of forgiveness and acquittal.  Because of Jesus’ obedience, he was the cause for many to be made acceptable to God, offering to freely take away our sins and to give us a glorious life instead.  But what most believers do not know is that it was one righteous act that resulted in mankind having right standing with God.  It is “Christ’s righteousness that makes man right with God, so that he can live.”

“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: not of works, lest any man should boast” (Ephesians 2:8-9).  “Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: by whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God” (Romans 5:1-2).

Because of God’s grace and his kindness, we are saved through the faith that we put in the atonement that Jesus provided for us.  It is this atonement, what Jesus did for us and not anything that we have done or ever could do, that has made this awesome gift of God available.  God’s grace, for the most part salvation, is not a reward for the good that we have done but is for the good that Jesus has done, making it impossible for any of us to take any credit for the gift.  And since we have been made right in the sight of God by putting our faith in the righteousness of Jesus, we now have peace with God, all because of what Jesus has done for us.  It is our faith in Jesus that grants us access to the grace of God, that free gift that grants us right standing with God.  Again, this right standing is not something that we can earn nor is there anything, not one thing that we can do to obtain it ourselves.  It only comes to us through our faith in Christ.

“For God presented Jesus as the sacrifice for sin.  People are made right with God when they believe that Jesus sacrificed his life, shedding his blood.  This sacrifice shows that God was being fair when he held back and did not punish those who sinned in times past, for he was looking ahead and including them in what he would do in this present time.  God did this to demonstrate his righteousness, for he himself is fair and just, and he declares sinners to be right in his sight when they believe in Jesus.  Can we boast, then, that we have done anything to be accepted by God?  No, because our acquittal is not based on obeying the law.  It is based on faith.  So we are made right with God through faith and not by obeying the law” (Romans 3:25-28 NLT).

Our righteousness or right standing is not based on us obeying the law but based instead on our faith in Jesus.  It is our faith in the righteousness of Jesus that grants us full access to the grace of God and grants us right standing with God.  We were made righteous because we believe in Jesus and his atonement for our sins, when he sacrificed his life and shed his blood on the cross.

“For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him” (II Corinthians 5:21).  “But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption: that, according as it is written, He that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord” (I Corinthians 1:30-31).

God made Jesus, who knew no sin, to be sin for us that we might be made the righteousness of God, though him.  God has joined us together with Jesus, for we are in Christ Jesus.  God made Jesus to be wisdom for us that by us putting our faith in him and his atonement, we are made right with God.  Through our faith in Jesus, we are made pure and holy, and have been freed from our sins.  Through our faith in Jesus, we have righteousness, sanctification, and deliverance.  As long as we put our faith in Jesus, he will never fail us.
