Devotion: God Has Already Given

Most believers do not understand what the statement, “God has already given” actually means.  Some believers have accepted religion’s definition of “the sovereignty of God” and believe that nothing happens without “the approval of God.”  They make God responsible for any and every thing that happens, whether it be good or bad, and completely removes our responsibility as to what happens in our life.  Other believers have accepted the other side of the coin, where the belief is that we control what happens to us.  They believe that we can motivate, convince, or even persuade God to move on our behalf through our persistent prayer, by our obedience to God’s laws, and even because of the good works that we do.  They make us responsibility for any and everything that happens, whether good or bad, and make God’s response subjected to our performance.

“According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue: whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust” (II Peter 1:1-4).

Scripture tells us that by God’s divine power, he has provided and made available to us everything necessary for godliness and life.  But the access to these provisions comes only through our knowledge of him who has called us unto himself, who has been our guide, and who has appealed to us through his virtue and his own glorious perfections.  This knowledge of him is what gives us access to these “exceeding great and precious promises,” which enables us to share in his divine nature and escape the corruption and destruction that is in this world caused by earthly cravings and through the desires of the flesh.  Everything that has been given to us and everything that has provided for us comes through the knowledge of God.  We gain our knowledge through the word of God, where knowing the word of God is to have faith in God (Romans 10:17) and having faith in God is to have knowledge of God.

“For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men” (Titus 2:11).  “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: not of works, lest any man should boast” (Ephesians 2:8-9).

Salvation is a great example of the purpose of this message.  According to scripture, the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared before all men.  Even though salvation has been revealed to every man, we know that not every man is saved, because it is not the grace that saves a person.  There appears to be something more that must be done in order to get this salvation.  This places some responsibility back on us as to whether we get salvation or not.  We also know that because of God’s grace and his kindness, we are saved through our faith, the faith that we have in God.  Our faith in God means that we also have knowledge of God and with this knowledge we have access to the “exceeding great and precious promises” of God, which includes salvation, healing, prosperity, love, joy, happiness, just to name a few.  Please note that there is nothing said about us having to do anything, not one single thing to motivate, convince, or even persuade God to move on our behalf.  Our salvation has already been provided for us by the grace of God.  It is not something that we have to ask God to do for us.  Because salvation is “a free gift,” made available by the grace of God, there is absolutely nothing we can do to earn it.  All we can do is receive this free gift by faith.

“As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him” (Colossians 2:6).

In the manner in which we received Christ Jesus our Lord is the manner we are to continue to walk.  When we came to God, we came humbly and ready to receive our salvation through our faith and it is in this manner that we are to continue to walk.  When we come for the other “exceeding great and precious promises” of God, we are to walk in the same manner that we walked to receive salvation.  When we come for healing, prosperity, and the like, we are to come humbly and ready to receive just as we did when we came to receive salvation.  Just as our salvation had already been provided, so have the other “exceeding great and precious promises” of God also been provided for us.  God has already provided and made available to us everything necessary for godliness, righteousness, and life, and all we have to do to get them is to simply by faith reach out and receive them.  Grace is not about getting God to move or about getting God to do something.  It is by grace that God has already done it, provided all that we need, and we just need to learn how to properly respond to this grace of God.

Today’s inspirational message talks about taking what God has given us.  As always, we pray that this message will bless you, inform you, and that you will be the better for having read it.  If blessed by this message, please share so that others may be blessed as well.  Amen.

Enjoy your blessings - KW
