Are you an encourager? Or are you a discourager? Most people are discouragers and do not even know that they are. Don’t get us wrong, there are some very negative, very disgruntled, and very unhappy people in the world. Normally, the things that they say can identify them. But, when was the last time you checked yourself to see what kind of things you say?
“And he said, That which cometh out of the man, that defileth the man. For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness: all these evil things come from within, and defile the man” (Mark 7:20-23).
Scripture tells us that it is what comes out of us that contaminates and makes us unclean. From inside of us, within our hearts flow evil thoughts, fornication, sexual sins, thefts, murders, adultery, covetousness, greed, wickedness, evil actions, deceit, licentiousness, unrestrained immorality, envy, reviling, insults, pride, arrogance, reckless folly, and foolishness. All these wicked things come out from within our heart to contaminate and make us unclean.
“A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh” (Luke 6:45).
From the abundant treasures that are stored in the heart, our mouth speaks. An evil man will speak from his evil treasures that which is evil, while a good man will speak from his good treasures that which is good. What we have an abundance of in our heart, be it evil or good, will be what comes out of our mouth.
“But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God. Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be” (James 3:8-10).
Did you know that your tongue, which scripture says, “can no man tame” is considered to be “an unruly evil that is full of deadly poison.” Our tongues stand ready to praise God and as well as ready to curse men. Both blessings and curses come from this tongue, out of the same mouth, which scripture mentions, “is not right.”
“Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers” (Ephesians 4:29). “But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin” (Hebrews 3:13). “Wherefore comfort yourselves together, and edify one another, even as also ye do” (I Thessalonians 5:11).
Scripture tells us to not let any unwholesome words, or any bad language come out of our mouths. We are to only say things that are good, helpful, or beneficial to those we are talking to and what will give them a blessing. Matter of fact, we are to encourage one another, day after day, while there is still time, so that no one will be hardened or blinded by the glamorous deceitful nature of sin.
“Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamor, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice: and be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you” (Ephesians 4:31-32). “Now we exhort you, brethren, warn them that are unruly, comfort the feebleminded, support the weak, be patient toward all men” (I Thessalonians 5:14).
We are told to stop being mean, bad-tempered and angry. We are to let all bitterness, all passionate feeling, all quarreling, all anger, all harsh words, all loud insulting language, and any dislike of others be put away and have no place in us. Instead, we are to be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving one another, just as God has forgiven us because we belong to Christ. We are to encourage each other to build up and strengthen each other. We are to admonish the unruly, warn those who are lazy, comfort those who are timid and frightened, take tender care of and sustain those who are weak, and be patient with everyone. The words that come out of our mouth are directly tied either to the good treasures or to the evil treasures that we have stored in our heart, which is the truest indicator as to whether we be an encourager or a discourager. Be the former and not the latter, “be an encourager.”
