Most of us have heard of God’s grace and of his mercy, but did you know that God is rich in his mercy?
“But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us (made us alive) together with Christ, (by grace ye are (have been) saved); and hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus: that in the ages to come he might show the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus. For by grace are ye (you have been) saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: not of works, lest any man should boast.” (Ephesians 2:4-9).
Because of his great love for us, God showed his mercy towards us. When we were still sinners, dead through our own offences, God showed great compassion for us by giving us our lives back when he raised Christ from the dead. Because of his grace, his unearned, unmerited favor, we have been saved, raised up together with Christ from the grave and into glory, where we sit with him in the heavenly places because of all that Jesus did. Now with all that he has done for us through Christ, God can forever point to us as examples of just how rich his mercy truly is. It is by God’s grace that we have been saved through our faith in what Christ has done, which was not something that we were able to do for ourselves. Our salvation is not our reward for the good works we have done or for us being good. No, our salvation is truly a gift from God, given to us by the grace of God. It is not something that we were able to earn; therefore, none of us can take any credit for it.
“But after that the kindness and love of God our Savior toward man appeared, not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost; which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Savior; that being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life (Titus 3:4-7).
When God revealed his kindness and love toward us, he saved us, not because we were good enough to be saved or because of any works of righteousness that we had done but because of his great love for and mercy upon us. God washed away all of our sins, gave us a new birth, and gave us a new life of joy through the Holy Spirit. He graciously poured out, with wonderful fullness, the Spirit in us because of what Christ had done. Then God in the richness of his grace and mercy declared us righteous and gave us the confidence that we would share in the wealth of the eternal life. We now eagerly look forward to receiving that life. All of this was done for and given to us because God is full of grace and rich in his mercy.
“Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God. Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual (I Corinthians 2:12-13).
We have heard of all of these wonderful free gifts of grace and blessings that God has given us from the Holy Spirit, which comes directly from God. This knowledge does not, cannot, and will not come from the spirit of the world. It can only come by revelation through the Holy Spirit. In telling us of these free gifts, Paul did not use the words that we as men might choose or the words that the world would use, but he used the very words given to him by the Holy Spirit when he explained spiritual truths in the spiritual language.
“And of his fullness have all we received, and grace for grace” (John 1:16).
We have all benefited from the superabundance of God’s grace and the richness of his mercy through Christ, receiving one spiritual blessing after another, one spiritual favor after another, and one spiritual gift after another.
“Praise ye the Lord. O give thanks unto the Lord; for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever” (Psalm 106:1). “O give thanks unto the Lord, for He is good: for His mercy endureth for ever” (Psalm 107:1). “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever” (Psalm 23:6).
Therefore, let us praise God and give him thanks because he is good, and his mercy endures forever. Surely his goodness and his mercy will follow us all the days of our life and we will live in the house of the Lord forever. God is rich in his mercy.
