When asked where “the word of God” can be found, the most popular answer is “the Bible.” Many believe the Bible to be the inerrant and infallible word of God, but is this belief the truth? Is the Bible actually the inerrant and infallible word of God? First, let us define a few important words. The first word “inerrant,” simply means “free from errors or untruths.” The next word “infallible,” means “incapable of making mistakes or being wrong” or simply “incapable of error.” Another definition says that “infallible” also means “absolutely trustworthy or sure.” When combined, we see why the Bible is said to be “absolutely trustworthy or sure” because of its association with the word of God. This has led many to consider the Bible of being “incapable of error, of making mistakes, or being wrong.” But does all of this mean that the entire Bible is true? That is a question that has been pondered throughout the ages.
Some claim that the Bible, written in the original manuscripts was inerrant and infallible, but find fault with some of the many translations that we have today. This brings us to the belief that one particular English translation of the Bible is the only inerrant and infallible version, somehow supernaturally translated from the original perfect manuscript. Most people do not know that the original Old Testament manuscripts were written in Hebrew and Aramaic text and that the original New Testament manuscripts were written in Greek text. This means that we are all dealing with translated versions of the original text and not the actual original text itself. And we all know what happens when we translate something from one language to another; there are some things that get lost in translation. Thescriptures do not say that any one particular version is given by the inspiration of God. And they certainly do not say that any one translation is given by the inspiration of God either. This includes that only “authorized version” many claim to be the only true translated version. Chances are, man authorized this version, not God. On the other hand, some believe that since “the Bible” was written by men, it is somehow flawed, containing many untruths or unproven things about God, the things of God, and about his instructions. But does all of this mean that the entire Bible is not true?
“The whole Bible, all scripture, was given to us by inspiration from God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives; it straightens us out and helps us do what is right. It is God’s way of making us well prepared at every point, fully equipped to do good to everyone” (II Timothy 3:16-17 TLB).
According to the above passage, all scripture is given by the inspiration of God to tell us what to believe, what is wrong, how to correct the wrong and how to live so that the man (child) of God may grow in maturity, to be perfect, and do what God wants. And while all scripture is given by the inspiration of God, not all scripture is inspired by God. Let us say this another way. While all scripture is given by divine influence from God or by the divine influence of God, not all scripture is divinely influenced by God. The Bible itself is not the inerrant and infallible word of God; the Bible “contains” the inerrant and infallible word of God. You see, the Bible contains “the words of God” along with the words of Adam and Eve, Cain, Noah, Enoch, Abraham and Sara, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Moses and Pharaoh, David, Rahab, Samuel, Job, numerous prophets, the disciples, Mary and Joseph, Paul, Jesus, and even Satan, himself. We think you get the idea. “The Bible” contains the words from an array of people in addition to containing “the words of God.” We know that the word of God is “incapable of error, of making mistakes, or being wrong” but the same does not apply to the entire Bible itself. It has been said that “everything in the Bible is truly stated, but not everything in the Bible is a statement of truth.”
This is why God tells us to “study to show thyself approved” so that we can “rightly divide the word of truth” (II Timothy 2:15), which is “the Bible.” The Bible is the word of truth, and it is to be divided, rightly. The fact that we must “rightly divide the word of truth,” infers that it is very possible for us to divide the word of truth, wrongly. We are also told to “attend to his words and to incline our ears to his sayings” because “they are life unto those that find them” (Proverbs 4:20-22). Therefore, when we study, we learn to rightly divide the word of truth and from this division, we find the “actual word of God,” which are full, abundant life unto all who hunt for, look for, or seek those words. Scripture tells us, “it is impossible for God to lie” (Titus 1:2), which means that he must always keep his word. And because we know that he must always keep his word, then we know that “the word of God” is forever true, forever inerrant, and forever infallible. And since we know that it is forever all of these things, then we know that it can be forever trusted.
We again give thanks to God for this avenue that he has given us to share his word through this inspirational message. We continually pray that God’s grace will be upon you and that these devotionals will forever bless you. If you are blessed by this message, please share it so that others may be blessed as well. Amen.
