Devotion: Is Money Your God?

Most of us have heard the phrase, “Money is the root of all evil.”  Stated this way, this phrase leads us to believe that “money” itself is “the root or cause of all evil.”

“For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows” (I Timothy 6:10).

According to scripture, it “the love of money” that is “the root or cause of all evil.”  The actual wording brings to light a slightly different interpretation where “the love of money” is the root cause of all kinds of evil and not money itself.  It is this “love of money,” this desire in people to be rich that is the first step of a downward spiral that causes all kinds of wrongdoings just to acquire this money.  Those who covet after money, fall into temptation, and do all kinds of unwise, destructive, and malicious things that eventually hurts them, all to satisfy this desire to gain access to money.  Because of their “love of money,” these same people have turned away from God, have been led astray from the faith, and have inflicted themselves with countless sorrows that eventually lead to their ruin and destruction.

“No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will stand by and be devoted to the one and despise and be against the other.  You cannot serve God and mammon (deceitful riches, money, possessions, or whatever is trusted in)” (Matthew 6:24 AMP).

Scripture tells us that we cannot serve two masters because we will hate one and love the other.  The scripture goes on to say that we will hold to the one, standing by it and be devoted to it while we despise the other and be against it.  Today, we worship “other gods” all the time, but the problem is that most do not know that they do this because they do not know who these other gods be or what they are.  “The other gods” can be “anyone or anything that comes before your relationship with God, anyone or anything that you put your trust in more than you trust in God and/or anyone or anything that you seek more then you seek God.”  These “other gods” can be in the form of money, people, pets, possession, activities, or even television shows, amongst many other things.  These “other gods” are what we have become slaves to and what have become “our master.”

“Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness” (Romans 6:16)?

Many believers do not realize that they have become slaves to that which they have chosen to obey.  We can be servants to sin, which leads to death, or we can be servants of obedience and choose to obey God, which leads to righteous living.  This is why we are told to “love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind” (Luke 10:27).  However, this is one commandment that becomes hard to obey if you have “love for money.”  You see, if you have this “love of money,” then you cannot love the Lord God with all of your heart, soul, strength, or mind.  Jesus told us that no man can serve two masters, because he will either love the one and hate the other or he will keep or hold on to one and have not respect for the other (Matthew 6:24).  God tells us that we are “to have no other gods before him” (Exodus 20:3), but this “love of money” is like having another god before God, where you love something else with all of your being instead loving of God, which is a very big “no-no.”  It is important to note that money, in and of itself, is not the root or cause of all evil, but it is this “love of money” that ends in man’s ruin and destruction.  Remember, the one you offer yourself to as an obedient servant is the one to whom you become the servant of.

“Do you serve money or does money serve you?”  Before you answer that question, you may want to revisit this whole money thing.  You just might get a little different perspective on this “money” thing.  As always, we forever pray that our inspirational message will abundantly bless you, greatly inform you, and that you will be the better for having read it.  If blessed by this message, please share so that others may be blessed as well.  Amen.

Enjoy your blessings - KW
